Conjuguant une forte influence de la soul des années 1970 et le son intime d’une chanteuse-compositrice, la chanteuse anglaise Corinne Bailey Rae, avec sa voix enfantine et sensuelle, rappellera à certains Macy Gray, tandis que les nuances subtiles et les textures jazzy de ses mélodies pourraient évoquer les noms de Norah Jones ou Alicia Keys. Pourtant, Rae apporte son empreinte personnelle à la formule neo-soul. Elle a écrit ou coécrit les 11 morceaux de l'album et assure une grande partie de l’accompagnement instrumental. Ses compositions étonnamment personnelles et travaillées combinées à sa manière de chanter, douce comme un solo de saxo de Lester Young (la mélodieuse "Like a Star") ou mélancolique et cadencée à la manière de Sly Stone (comme dans le single "Put Your Records On" qui l’a propulsée dans les charts), la démarquent clairement du lot.
