Ce mélange bouillonnant de blues bizarre, de rock progressif rustique, de pop fracturée et de guitares matraquantes fait un sacré pied de nez à ceux qui auraient osé définir les Raconteurs comme une broutille de power pop, et prouve qu’ils sont bel et bien un groupe de rock'n'roll. On a constamment l’impression que les Raconteurs donnent vie à la moindre fantaisie qui passe par la tête de Jack White, mais sans le laisser entrer dans le territoire hautement contrôlé des White Stripes, que ce soit dans les opéras western mélodramatiques tels que "The Switch and the Spur" ou les trucages lisses de studio qui font de cet album la plus grosse production associée à White en date. La confluence du traditionnel et du moderne y est plutôt délibérée, mais ne semble jamais excessivement réfléchie. Les ruades et les crépitements de Consolers of the Lonely relèvent de la musique cinétique pure.
