Succès colossal ou pas, Chris Martin n'en est pas moins homme, et trois ans après le déluge sonore de Xyloto Myloto, fable imprononçable vendue à huit millions d'unités, c'est dans les bras de la psychanalyse qu'on retrouve le chanteur de Coldplay après sa séparation médiatisée de l'actrice Gwyneth Paltrow.
« I think of you, I haven't slept » (« Je pense à toi, je n'ai pas pu dormir »), clame-t-il d'emblée dans ce sixième album en forme de litanie, ressassant une à une les pensées survenues lors de cette épreuve, mises en musique par la même équipe d'orfèvres menée par Jon Hopkins et Paul Epworth. Journal intime de la rupture après dix ans de mariage, Ghost Stories déroule, le tempo accordé sur les battements de coeur, un climat synthétique et onirique sur la trame la plus minimaliste jamais conçue par le groupe.
Des mélodies économes, à la manière du tube évanescent « Magic », n'empêchent pas une certaine générosité en atmosphères vaporeuses et textures ambient, tels « Always In My Head » et « Another's Arms », ornés de choeurs célestes. Sous ce ciel vers lequel s'est envolé l'amour scintillent des myriades d'effets de production : envolées de guitares (« A Sky Full of Stars », par Tim Bergling alias Avicii), nuages de claviers (« Midnight »; sous la patte de Jon Hopkins et « O » avec Apple et Moses Martin dans les choeurs) et boucles rythmiques (« Ink » et « True Love », avec Timbaland).
Sous un aspect déroutant par sa lenteur, doublé par des enchaînements en douceur, le charme de Ghost Stories finit par opérer au fil de sa longue et douloureuse traversée, symbolisée par « Ink » et son tatouage obsolète. De façon inattendue, Coldplay, replié en position foetale, redevient le groupe de pop rock humble des débuts, doté pour la circonstance d'une production à la hauteur de son statut actuel. Cette parenthèse cathartique refermée, le quatuor britannique qui a retrouvé son âme est désormais prêt à renaître de la plus belle des manières qui soit.
