In the years following their 2012 blockbuster single "I Love It," Icona Pop's Aino Jawo and Caroline Hjelt were a constant blur of activity, playing shows and cranking out singles, EPs, and collaborations until the COVID-19 global pandemic forced them to take a break. Holed up in Stockholm, they enjoyed the quiet (and new motherhood) but missed the stage and the clubs, so they created a virtual nightlife space that evolved into Club Romantech. On their first full-length in a decade, Icona Pop return to what they've always done best: making their own space within the worlds of pop and dance music. Hjelt and Jawo balance compact, hooky songs and restless dancefloor movers as nimbly as they keep up with EDM trends and stay true to their roots. "Make Up Your Mind Babe" calls out an indecisive lover with a darker, grittier feel reminiscent of the duo's friend Tove Lo, but "Feels in My Body" and the Galantis collaboration "I Want You" update the exuberant, direct sound that put Icona Pop on the map. The harder-edged tracks are kinetic reminders of the duo's dance music bona fides, whether on the throwback house of "Faster" or "Stick Your Tongue Out," which boasts a warping groove and builds and breakdowns that beg to be stretched out in a remix. Though Icona Pop are usually associated with nonstop fun, they leave room for more pensive and sophisticated moments on Club Romantech, most strikingly on the breezy, string-laden heartache of "Loving You Ain't Easy." And while Jawo and Hjelt might not always be as irrepressible here as they were on "I Love It," their shouty, us-against-the-world camaraderie is as strong as ever on "Where Do We Go from Here," one of the first songs they recorded after returning to Sweden. Club Romantech is the rare album where many of the highlights appear at the end: The slinky VIZE team-up "Off of My Mind," "You're Free"'s celebratory collaboration with Ultra Naté, and the cheeky "Spa" (which features Sofi Tukker) sound as fresh on the album as they did when they were released as singles. Club Romantech flows like a well-curated DJ set, and by imagining the club night of their dreams, Icona Pop prove they've still got EDM-pop down to an art.
