Des membres du groupe Eagles, Don Henley est celui qui conduisit la carrière solo la plus intéressante et la plus lucrative. Après un premier album paru deux ans auparavant, assez intéressant (malgré sa tentative risible de chanter en français sur une version alternative en 45 tours de « Johnny Can’t Read »), il s’entoure de pointures de la scène américaine (Jeff Porcaro, Lindsey Buckingham, Mike Campbell et Benmont Tench des Heartbreakers de Tom Petty, Belinda Carlisle, Jim Keltner, Ian Wallace, Larry Klein, entre autres) et collabore surtout avec le joueur de claviers Danny Kortchmar.
Aux antipodes de la musique d'Eagles, l’album lui apporte quatre hits taillés pour les radios FM : « The Boys of Summer » (n° 5, qu’il ajoutera plus tard au répertoire de scène lors de la reformation d'Eagles) et « All She Wants to Do Is Dance » (avec Martha Davis de The Motels aux chœurs, où il fustige l’administration Reagan) en 1984, « Not Enough Love in the World » (repris par Cher en 1996) et l’interminable « Sunset Grill » en 1985, l’année où il obtient le Grammy Award de la meilleure performance vocale pour « The Boys of Summer », nostalgique, au rythme séduisant emporté par une boîte à rythmes et un synthetiseur ; son clip vidéo a été realisé en noir et blanc par Jean-Baptiste Mondino, lançant ainsi sa carrière de vidéaste, son œuvre ayant été couverte de récompenses.
Don Henley se prend curieusement pour Little Richard dans « Man With a Mission », mais l’album est plutôt l’affaire de « symphonettes » électroniques où il laisse paraître sa sensibilité voire sa sensiblerie (« Drivin’ With Your Eyes Closed » où il cite Rimbaud et Baudelaire).
