Hard to tell if the title is sarcastic or a fervent prayer that this album wouldn't sound as milquetoast as it does. This is a far cry from Pantoja's earlier material that made a name for her, and she sounds remarkably uninvolved with the proceedings. Where the material requires the expression of passion, she sounds as though she's feigning it, although the arrangements are so unimaginative and the production so overwhelming that perhaps only inappropriate melodrama could really cut through it all. Latin American telenovela music programmers are the target audience for this effort, and one can hardly blame her for trying to gain a foothold in that lucrative market. Predictably, she places the one genuinely catchy track (and hit for her), "El Moreno," first. After that, it's all downhill. On the second track, she is overshadowed by her guest, José Feliciano, whose singing in recent years (in Spanish, at least) has almost always managed to distinguish itself even in the most mawkish and syrupy of musical settings. The remaining tracks are well-produced, inelegant, and unmemorable. Pantoja's voice is still strong and recognizable, but although that might sell discs, it doesn't sell collectable discs. Romantic divas, sadly, often forget that, for all their abilities, they are still only a part of the whole; that they still need to surround their voices with imaginative arrangements, and lilting melodies played by expert musicians if they want to make great art. Isabel Pantoja deserves and should have demanded better.
