La rencontre entre Isobel Campbell, chanteuse de Belle and Sebastian, et Mark Lanegan, ex Screaming Trees, paraît improbable tant leurs univers sont dissemblables. Elle n'est pas sans évoquer celle de Lee Hazlewood et Nancy Sinatra qui avait produit les chefs d'oeuvre que l'on sait dans les années soixante, ou celle plus brève entre Nick Cave et Kylie Minogue sur « Where the Wild Roses Grow ».
La chanteuse, également compositrice et productrice de cet album, rejoint Mark Lanegan sur son terrain, celui d'un blues éraillé et usé par la vie et d'une country assombrie par les épreuves. Un zeste de lumière parvient à filtrer grâce à la voix de l'Ecossaise, offrant quelques demi-teintes agréables.
Les compositions, pour la plupart admirables, font de Ballad of the Broken Seas un disque à la beauté sombre et mélancolique. Le classique « Ramblin' Man » (Hank Williams) est au programme.
