Produites par Michael Lloyd (qui fut le superviseur musical de la BO de Dirty Dancing), les 15 reprises de cet album offrent un panorama complet et touchant de la carrière de Johnny Hallyday à travers l’hommage d’une femme qui a tellement compté pour lui. Naturellement, les années 1960 et 1970 ont une place à part puisqu’il s’agit des deux décennies de leur mariage. Dans Retiens la nuit, malgré la tendre nostalgie qui dissémine la musique de Georges Garvarentz, Sylvie Vartan joue la carte d’une sensualité torride, comme si elle se projetait littéralement à l’époque des yéyés, où leur relation était encore au beau fixe. On l’aura compris, on ne trouvera aucun pathos à l’horizon de cet album-hommage qui paraît à l’occasion du premier anniversaire de la mort du chanteur. Bien au contraire, Vartan célèbre ici la vie et l’amour, tout comme le faisait Johnny. Même constat pour les incontournables Que je t’aime et Le Pénitencier, que la chanteuse interprète avec toute son âme. Le Johnny des années 1980 et 1990 est également bien représenté. On retiendra notamment la ballade Quelque chose de Tennessee, qui sied si bien au phrasé particulier de Sylvie Vartan, ainsi que le lyrique Vivre pour le meilleur, dans lequel celle qui est également une grande comédienne s’en donne à cœur joie. Enfin, Sang pour sangest un moment particulièrement bouleversant de l’album, le morceau étant écrit par le fils qu’elle a eu avec Johnny (sans parler du thème de la chanson).
