Ashanti par Ashanti est un album de R&B des plus typiques, les tempos lents succèdent aux ballades, la voix est belle mais sans aspérité, sans vraiment de personnalité. La production de Irv Gotti est soignée, le son est parfait pour des enceintes Bose ou des chaînes hi-fi Bang & Olufsen.
Portée par ses succès précédents en collaboration avec Ja Rule et Fat Joe, Ashanti avance en terrain conquis. Le simple « Foolish » est calibré pour être No 1, il ne faillit pas et atteint l'objectif. Ashanti est également présent sur la plus haute marche des ventes.
Ashanti ne se contente pas de ces performances à la maison, il devient un best seller international, faisant de son interprète une véritable révélation. Ashanti est No 3 en Angleterre, no 10 en Allemagne et No 29 en France.
Le lot des ballades langoureuses est de vite lasser, Ashanti n'a pas la dynamique d'une Beyoncé, la classe d'une Aaliyah, le charme d'une Alicia Keyes, ses atouts sont réels mais pas exceptionnels. Ashanti en souffre, il reste un album écoutable mais vite oublié.
