Les éléments qui avaient fait la réussite du premier album d’Interpol (notamment les guitares arachnéennes et la rythmique prédominante) sont à nouveau présents ici, mais un certain brio fait bel et bien la différence, ainsi qu’une atmosphère plus détendue, presque enjouée, qui baigne les chansons, où l'on entend avec ravissement des touches de tambourin et des claviers : la formule patiemment élaborée par le groupe a fini par déclencher une alchimie entre ses membres.
« Narc », le troisième titre, s’impose dès la première écoute comme une composition tout à fait remarquable, la voix de Paul Banks s’étant rendue faussement détachée, presque captivante, chacun des musiciens atteignant le top du top sur « Slow Hands », avec ses breaks retors et sa batterie presque funky. Rien n’est en trop ici, les chansons forment un ensemble cohérent et homogène, qui sera à nouveau très bien accueilli par la critique et les acheteurs, et permettra à Interpol de passer désormais en tête d’affiche, de remplir des Zénith, et de donner à leur tour un coup de pouce à des copains. Juste une bonne vieille histoire bien rock n’roll, en somme...
