Flamboyant, orchestral et synthétique, le quatuor londonien n’a pas choisi de faire dans la demi-mesure pour ce coup d’essai, souhaitant s’aligner sur le calibre de quelques groupes britanniques d’envergure tels Coldplay, Muse ou autres versants féminins à l’instar de Florence + the Machine. Premier opus publié sur la major EMI pour la bande de Dan Smith, Bad Blood a effectivement quelques gouttes de sang déloyal qui coulent entre ses pistes, faussant la tradition du pop rock charismatique d’outre-Manche et préférant s’assurer le carton commercial.
Album bâtard, dont les premiers extraits ont été dévoilés progressivement dès 2010 et remarqués lors de la livraison du single officiel « Overjoyed » deux ans plus tard, Bad Blood manque la mention baroque et la profondeur d’un art rock bien senti pour se contenter d’une pop téléphonée et intelligible. De la synth pop taillée pour les stades, certes, ostentatoire mais sans relief, imbibée de bourrasques de chœurs (« Pompeii ») ou de cordes (« Laura Palmer ») et teintée de dance beats au détriment d’harmonies electro nuancées (« Weight of Living, Pt. II »).
Et ce ne sont pas les ballades faussement mélancoliques aux nappes de piano spongieuses comme sur « Oblivion » qui n'a définitivement rien à voir avec le morceau d’IDM homonyme signé Grimes, qui apporteront en caution émotion et songwriting. Un premier jet surdimensionné.
