Ce troisième album de Neil Young qui parait au cœur de l’été 1970 renferme certaines de ses plus belles chansons. Le songwriting du Canadien monte ici d’un cran, ses mélodies touchent au sublime (Only Love Can Break Your Heart) tout comme les harmonies vocales, plus exquises les unes que les autres (I Believe In You). Epoque oblige, l’utopie hippy reste sa préoccupation, tout comme l’engagement politique qui au cœur du fameux hymne anti-redneck Southern Man (auquel Lynyrd Skynyrd répondra par Sweet Home Alabama). Surtout, After The Goldrush est magique dans son parfait équilibre entre rock, folk et même country (le Loner revisite Oh, Lonesome Me de Don Gibson), un alliage dont Neil Young reste l’un des plus brillants ambassadeurs. © MZ/Qobuz
