Du 2 au 7 juin 1970, Crosby, Stills, Nash et Young se produisent sur la scène du légendaire Fillmore East de New York et peuvent à cette occasion mesurer le chemin parcouru depuis leur précédent passage dans ce lieu six mois auparavant. Porté par les succès commerciaux de son premier album studio, Déjà Vu, paru en mars, et du film Woodstock dont il est une des têtes d'affiche, le quatuor s'est élevé au rang de super groupe, revendiquant une suprématie musicale totale à l'heure où les Beatles ne sont plus et où Bob Dylan se terre.
Traduction donc avec une foule qui doit faire le tour complet de l'immeuble de la salle pour prendre place dans la queue donnant accès à l'événement, et comportement capricieux des nouvelles stars à travers des exigences portant autant sur le son et la lumière que sur la cuisine ou l'état du tapis recouvrant la scène. Qu'importe, l'essentiel est ailleurs car il s'agit ici d'une collection en concert de chansons reflétant exactement l'esprit de l'époque, qu'elles soient interprétées en solitaire par chacun de leur auteur pendant la première partie du set ou le fruit d'une convergence électrique complète pour achever celui-ci. Jamais le groupe ne retrouvera cette grâce qui l'habite cette année là et chacun des quatre musiciens est au sommet de son art.
D'époustouflantes combinaisons vocales parsèment le premier disque avec tout d'abord le sublime « The Lee Shore » où David Crosby déballe une de ses fameuses peintures marines, subtilement retouchée par les voix de Nash et Stills; « Le Mayan (son voilier) représente quelque chose de positif et de sain pour moi, et il m'a carrément sauvé la vie en plusieurs occasions. C'est un changement d'air pour moi. Il me détache de cette célébrité. L'océan s'en fout, il n'a jamais entendu parler de vous ». Même constat pour le très Simon et Garfunkelien « Right Between The Eyes » avec les mêmes, alors que tout seul, Crosby vante les mérites du ménage à trois sur « Triad », préoccupation très domestique qu'il partage avec Graham Nash (créé par le Jefferson Airplane sur Crown of Creation en 68) et comme le montre « Teach Your Children », énorme succès de l'album Déjà Vu.
Nash est capable de plus d'énergie et d'audace, ainsi « Chicago » est dédié au maire de la ville qui a abrité la convention démocrate de 1968 et qui su si bien réprimer les manifestations d'étudiants mécontents et balance des accords pianos en trois temps trois mouvements, beau support pour les voix d'or de son auteur et de David Crosby.
C'est aussi au piano que Stephen Stills met le feu avec « 49 bye-byes/America's Children », énorme groove porté par la voix très soul du multi-instrumentiste qu'on retrouve plus loin en blues man inspiré sur « Black Queen ».
Arrive alors Neil Young, de son propre avis la 5ème roue du carrosse, qui délivre avec une gracieuse fragilité vocale une série de chefs d'œuvre issus pour la plupart de ses réalisations en solo et qui prennent ici une dimension qui donne le frisson: « Cowgirl In The Sand », « Down By The River », « Don't Let It Bring You Down » imposent un silence respectueux à une audience sûrement à genoux.
Place ensuite, après la pause, à l'électricité avec Johnny Barbata à la batterie et Calvin « Fuzzy » Samuels à la basse qui rejoignent CSNY pour de véritables morceaux de bravoure à la guitare où Stills, Young et Crosby rivalisent d'habilité technique, portant la confrontation sonique au-delà des 13 minutes sur « Southern Man » et « Carry On ». tube de discothèque en France durant l'Eté 71 dans cette version longue.
État de grâce des six musiciens et réelle transe à chaque fin de ces six morceaux finals qui passent en revue les maux de l'Amérique à travers des chansons très politiques. L'activisme de la bande des quatre trouve son illustration dans l'enchaînement de « Long Time Gone » qui évoque l'assassinat de Robert Kennedy avec la dénonciation du racisme sudiste de « Southern Man », perle de Neil Young, tout comme son homologue « Ohio » écrite en réaction au massacre d'étudiants de l'université de Kent State par la garde nationale. Les dirigeants américains sont prévenus qu'une force nouvelle est en marche et qu'un orage électrique la porte, la contre-culture ayant trouvé dans Crosby, Stills, Nash et Young des hérauts très réactifs à l'actualité politique chargée de ce début des années soixante-dix.
Moins gravement, la sonnette d'alarme est tirée ensuite sur « Carry On » car « love is coming », et rien ne cloche dans l'interprétation du premier titre de l'album Déjà Vu, nouvelle occasion de vérifier l'état de l'électricité de la salle pendant près de 14 minutes. Pour finir, une belle chorale a capella pour trouver le prix de la liberté (« Find The Cost Of Freedom ») à défaut de celui de l'amitié car miné par des conflits internes, le groupe a quasiment déjà implosé deux semaines avant ce concert et presque définitivement à la sortie du disque au printemps 1971. Cette ode aux martyrs américains de la liberté (Lincoln, les deux Kennedy, Martin Luther King) écrite par Stills à la demande de Dennis Hopper (en prévision de la scène finale de Easy Rider),terminait invariablement tous les concerts du quatuor.
Rien ne va plus pour CSNY ensuite après l'échec de l'enregistrement d'un nouvel album studio début 1972, habilement remplacé par la compilation So Far sur laquelle figure « Ohio » et « Find The Cost Of Freedom ». Il faut dire que l'aventure en groupe n'intéresse plus guère le très exigeant Neil Young et chacun va donc vaquer à de fructueux projets solos, ne se retrouvant qu'épisodiquement, au grès des humeurs du canadien qui s'affirme rapidement comme le plus talentueux des 4, alignant les succès personnels.
4 Way Street a ainsi capté la magie d'un moment, osmose musicale parfaite entre quatre personnalités fortes mais surtout entre un groupe et toute une génération qui a pu déceler dans ses chansons les préoccupations qui l'obsédaient alors.

Cette ode aux martyrs américains de la liberté (Lincoln, les deux Kennedy, Martin Luther King) écrite par Stills à la demande de Dennis Hopper (en prévision de la scène finale de Easy Rider),terminait invariablement tous les concerts du quatuor.
Rien ne va plus pour CSNY ensuite après l'échec de l'enregistrement d'un nouvel album studio début 1972, habilement remplacé par la compilation So Far sur laquelle figure « Ohio » et « Find The Cost Of Freedom ». Il faut dire que l'aventure en groupe n'intéresse plus guère le très exigeant Neil Young et chacun va donc vaquer à de fructueux projets solos, ne se retrouvant qu'épisodiquement, au grès des humeurs du canadien qui s'affirme rapidement comme le plus talentueux des 4, alignant les succès personnels.
4 Way Street a ainsi capté la magie d'un moment, osmose musicale parfaite entre quatre personnalités fortes mais surtout entre un groupe et toute une génération qui a pu déceler dans ses chansons les préoccupations qui l'obsédaient alors.
