En 1965, l’uppercut d’un jeune groupe californien a eu de quoi faire trembler les rois de la pop anglaise déjà bien en place : “Mr. Tambourine Man”, le premier single des Byrds arrive 1er dans les charts anglais. D’autres reprises de Bob Dylan leur porteront chance, en particulier “Turn! Turn! Turn!”, terreau fertile qui leur permettra de créer un genre nouveau, le Folk-Rock. Mais ce titre de fondateur ne les empêchera pas pour autant d’exceller dans d’autres sphères : la décennie des années 60 est témoin des différentes explorations du groupe, du rock psychédélique (avec “Fifth Dimension) à la country (sur “Notorious Byrd Brothers” ou “Sweetheart of The Rodeo” dont le légendaire Gram Parsons fut l'architecte). Les Byrds ouvriront la voie à plusieurs songwriters dont Gene Clark, David Crosby et Jim McGuinn, qui deviendront des légendes autant en solo que parmi d'autres groupes.
