Stanislav Khristenko
Pianist Stanislav Khristenko was among the world's most frequently honored artists at prize competitions during the first years of his career. Settling in the U.S., he has been signed to the Steinway & Sons label.
Khristenko was born in Kharkov (now Kharkiv), Ukraine, in what was then the Soviet Union, on May 25, 1984. He began taking piano lessons at age seven. Khristenko was winning awards even in his teens, taking a fourth prize at the Ettlingen International Piano Competition for young pianists in Germany in 1998, and following it up with a first prize at the Kosice International Piano Competition in Slovakia the following year. Khristenko attended Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory and then resumed his prize-winning ways, often winning several competitions in the same year. One milestone was the Cleveland International Piano Competition in 2005: Khristenko did not win, taking the third prize, but he gained exposure in the U.S. and earned several more prizes there. He also entered the Cleveland Institute of Music for further study, working with Sergei Babayan and earning an Artist Certificate in 2010. In 2013, Khristenko took first prizes at the Cleveland International Piano Competition and the Maria Canals International Piano Competition in Spain. In all, he has won 25 different competitions in 10 countries. He has appeared with, among other groups, the Cleveland Orchestra, the Phoenix Symphony, and the Hong Kong Chamber Orchestra, as well as giving recitals at such top venues as Carnegie Hall, the Schubertsaal in Vienna, and the Phillips Collection in Washington.
In 2012, Khristenko made his recording debut on the Oehms label with an album of piano music by Ernst Krenek. He moved to the U.S.-based Steinway & Sons in 2014 for the album Fantasies, and the following year he was added to the roster of that label. In 2019, he released a recording of Prokofiev's transcription of music from his own ballet Romeo and Juliet.
