Harvey McKay

For a period in the mid-2010s, this prolific Glasgow-born techno DJ and producer released some of the best-selling contemporaneous tracks in the genre. As a teenager, Harvey McKay spent a large part of the '90s DJing, drawing influence from the rising techno act Slam. The duo offered him slots at their Soma-sponsored club nights, eventually signing him to the label in 2008, a year that brought the minimalist singles "Output" and "69." Prior to this, he released sides on Ali Wells' Perc Trax and Mark Gwinnett and Saytek's Cubism. In 2009, McKay made a prestigious appearance at SXSW and issued his debut album, Machine Make Noise. Aside from a couple of side endeavors -- 2010's "Welshly Arms" on the Dutch label Manual and 2011's "McGurk Effect" on 8-Sided Dice -- the next couple of years saw him almost exclusively release on Soma, promoting his wares with numerous U.K. live appearances. McKay's relationship with Soma continued in a lesser capacity into 2014, as his career began to blossom further afield in the intervening years. 2013 took him to the U.S., Spain, and France and saw him release on Saved, Suara, and Cocoon. However, that November, "Lost," his debut single on Adam Beyer's Drumcode, marked a turning point in his fortunes. 2014 became one of his peak years in sales terms as The Illusion of Control -- his sophomore release for the Swedish label -- fared well alongside efforts on Bedrock and Intec Digital. His profile was dealt an additional boost with an appearance at that year's Awakenings Festival. Dutch festival slots in subsequent years -- including 2015's Nachtbrigade Winterparade, Outdoor Stereo, and Wonderland, and 2016's Wildeburg -- helped to keep his name at the forefront in techno circles. In 2017, along with his brother, Ryan, he formed the duo Alias (later renamed Alias GB), who released Visions, a hypnotic debut EP on Drumcode. 2018 brought another Alias single, "NRG," but also saw McKay travel farther than any time in the preceding years when he performed at Arkham in Shanghai, a Drumcode showcase in L.A., and the very first Drumcode festival in Amsterdam. A third Alias release, "Force," appeared in early 2019, a period in which McKay began a productive solo run on both Reinier Zonneveld's Filth on Acid and the London label Kneaded Pains, which lasted a couple of years. In early 2022, the dark and brooding cut "Forest" became McKay's debut single on Gregor Tresher's German label Break New Soil.
