Andrè Schuen

Versatile and charismatic, baritone Andrè Schuen is a prominent figure among his generation of opera stars from Italy. He is a versatile figure whose repertory runs from Mozart to contemporary music. In 2020, he was signed to the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label, emerging as a major new voice on the lieder scene. There, he released a set of Schubert's three major song cycles, concluding with Winterreise, D. 911, in 2024.Schuen was born in 1984 in La Val, in northern Italy's South Tyrol region. His native tongue was a small regional language called Ladin, and he also grew up speaking Italian and German, both commonly spoken in the area; he has sung professionally in all three languages. (The unusual grave accent mark on "Andrè" is correct in Italian.) His family members were multilingual, and there were several musicians among them. Schuen's first instrument was the cello, which he played for many years, but, switching to singing, he decided to enroll at the Salzburg Mozarteum in Austria, where he studied with soprano Horiana Branisteanu and took lessons in lieder and oratorio singing from baritone Wolfgang Holzmair. Schuen was already performing widely by the time he graduated from the Mozarteum in 2010, appearing in 2009 in Luigi Nono's Al gran sole carico d'amore. From 2010 to 2014, Schuen was a member of the Graz Opera Company and also performed vocal and choral music on the side, appearing with the Berlin Philharmonic under Simon Rattle in 2011. He made a major splash with his appearances at the Theater an der Wien in Vienna in 2014 in a series of productions of Mozart operas conducted by Nikolaus Harnoncourt; he sang the roles of Figaro, Don Giovanni, and Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. In 2015, Schuen made his recording debut with pianist Daniel Heide, releasing an album of songs by Schumann, Wolf, and Frank Martin on the CAvi-music label.Since then, Schuen has appeared at various major houses and has also made an impact as a lieder singer, often appearing with Heide; the pair has performed at London's Wigmore Hall, among other venues. He has appeared as Papageno in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte at the Wiener Staatsoper and performances of the three major Schubert song cycles with Heide at the Schubertiade Schwarzenberg. He made three more albums on CAvi-music before joining Deutsche Grammophon's roster and releasing the three major Schubert song cycles, again in recordings with Heide. In 2021, he recorded Die Nacht der Verlorene by composer Thomas Larcher for the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra for the Ondine label. Schuen's recording of Winterreise, D. 911, appeared in 2024 on Deutsche Grammophon.
