Disparu en 2020 à seulement 26 ans la suite d’une fusillade, King Von n’a pas eu le temps de profiter du succès de Welcome to O’Block, paru une semaine seulement avant sa mort. What It Means to Be The King est ainsi le premier album posthume du rappeur originaire de Chicago, dont la sortie fut très tôt confirmée par son ami producteur Chopsquad DJ. Véritable événement sur la planète rap, le disque propose des duos avec de nombreux rappeurs, parmi lesquels G Herbo, 21 Savage, Fivio Foreign, Moneybagg Yo, l’incontournable Lil Durk ou encore A Boogie wit da Hoodie. Les simples « Don’t Play That » ou encore « Car », n’ont pas tardé à s’illustrer dans les charts américains, mais au-delà des chansons, le disque élargit la vision définie par King Von sur son premier album tout en touchant du doigt ce qui aurait pu être son évolution artistique. Une réussite globale donc, surtout à l’écoute de morceaux frissonnants tels que « Where I’m From » porté par un piano des plus sombres.
