D’un relatif anonymat, Brent Faiyaz a émergé pour installer son deuxième album, Wasteland, sur la deuxième marche des charts américains, cinq ans après son premier effort, Sonder Son. Entretemps, l’EP de 2020, Fuck the World et les participations successives de Tyler, the Creator à « Gravity » et Drake à « Wasting Time » en 2021, ont permis son avènement. Ces deux titres intègrent ce généreux album de 19 titres, qui inclut également la participation pétrie d’élégance d'Alicia Keys à « Ghetto Gatsby » ou celle de Joony à « FYTB ». Intrigant et profond comme « Villain’s Theme » ou « Price of Fame », mêlant R&B et rap à l’image de « Loose Change », parfois décousu avec ces interludes (« Heal Your Heart », « Skit: Egomaniac »), cet opus est le plus souvent pertinent. Capable de déconstruire un gospel (« All Mine ») comme de rendre le R&B hypnotique (« Dead Man Walking »), Brent Faiyaz signe un disque à la fois érudit, actuel et accessible.
