Après deux énormes succès commerciaux, Culture Club voit en 1984 son troisième album sortir. Plusieurs singles sont extraits de Waking Up with the House on Fire, mais le succès n’est pas celui escompté.
« The War Song », premier single, se classe au Top 10 en Grande-Bretagne et au Top 20 aux Etats-Unis ; mais les deux autres singles (« The Medal Song » et « Mistake No.3 ») se classent moins bien Comparativement aux titres du précédent album, les singles ne connaissent donc qu’un succès bien modéré.
L’album se vend tout de même à 2 millions d’exemplaires (dont 1 million aux Etats-Unis). Il est certifié Disque de platine aux Etats-Unis et double Disque de platine au Canada. Dès ce troisième album, le déclin du groupe est donc bel et bien amorcé.
