En 1967, le public n’avait pas encore digéré leur renversant premier album que les Doors enchaînaient avec Strange Days. Etranges comme ces compositions qui ne ressemblaient alors à celles d’aucun autre groupe. Des thèmes titubants et souvent assez oniriques. Si Jim Morrison chantait que les gens étaient étranges, on pouvait en dire autant de ses Doors : changements de rythme incessants, prose alternant entre critique sociale et pur délire et grands écarts entre transe totale et ballade de cabaret… Les mois passent et Morrison est de plus en plus incontrôlable. Début 1968, les Doors attaquent tout de même la construction de Waiting for the Sun. Les anecdotes sont légion sur ces semaines chaotiques comme jamais. Pourtant, lorsqu’il paraît en juillet en plein guerre du Vietnam, les fans s’emparent de l’hymne pacifiste The Unknown Soldier et du guilleret Hello, I Love You qui ouvre ce troisième album et l’installent au sommet des charts. Conscients de l’instabilité de leur leader, Ray Manzarek, Robby Krieger et John Densmore restent concentrés pour que leurs parties soient originales et inspirées. Un cran en dessous des deux précédents disques, Waiting for the Sun aborde pourtant le psychédélisme avec la même originalité. L’utilisation d’instruments acoustiques et le raffinement de certains arrangements confirment l’originalité d'un groupe pourtant au bord de l’implosion… © Max Dembo/Qobuz
