Aretha Franklin a fait ses adieux le 16 août 2018 – quarante-et-un ans pile après le King Elvis – et son amie proche Candi Staton lui doit beaucoup. C’est en chantant Do Right Man, Do Right Women dans une salle miteuse de l’Alabama que son futur mari Clarence Carter lui fait rencontrer Rick Hall, du label éponyme. En 2018, Staton compte trente disques au compteur avec comme dernière sortie Unstoppable, qui s’ouvre avec Confidence. Tout un symbole quand on sait que la dame approche les 80 printemps… Et si l’album oscille entre tentatives pop-disco mal dégrossies (Stand Up, Love Is You), d’autres pépites soul à la production léchée viendront rappeler la grandeur d’une des patronnes de la soul sudiste, à l’instar de l’excellentissime ballade – malgré ses chœurs kitsch – Revolution of Change et sa patine 70’s.
