While an all-acoustic Jimmie Dale Gilmore album sounds like a splendid idea, don't let the title mislead you on this one -- Unplugged is actually just a resequenced and reshuffled version of the 1972 sessions Gilmore recorded with Joe Ely and Butch Hancock, for the ill-fated debut album from the Flatlanders. There's plenty of great music here, to be sure, but the packaging and track sequence leave an awful lot to be desired, and frankly, everything here has been released before in better and more attractive form. Rounder's More a Legend Than a Band remains the definitive presentation of these classic Flatlanders sessions, and After Awhile is a reasonable substitute for those wanting an "unplugged" Gilmore session; pick up either or both, and leave this one in the rack.
