Quand le philosophe allemand Emmanuel Kant a théorisé le dualisme de l’homme (et de la femme, donc) au XVIIe siècle, il était loin d’imaginer ce qu’en ferait slowthai 350 ans plus tard. Le rappeur anglais, sale gosse de l’Outre-Manche, trop souvent catégorisé white trash, prouve dans cet album que l’artiste est double lui aussi. Il y a celui qui se lâche, et celui qui se livre. C’est pour cela que Tyron (le titre est tiré du vrai prénom de slowthai) est divisé en deux parties. D’abord, celle qui montre que sa hargne est toujours là. Avec des titres où priment la lourdeur tels que Wot, avec cette patte sonore imposée par son beatmaker fétiche Bleu Daisy, et le featuring remarquable de Skepta sur Cancelled, cette première salve satisfait les fans de la première heure, ceux qui avaient senti chez le rappeur une force d’interprétation rare. Il suffit d’écouter le titre Vex pour s’en persuader. Mais dans un second temps, slowthai se fait franchement fleur bleu. Changement radical de sonorités, d’intentions, le voici toutes mélodies dehors, parlant avec le cœur de mélancolie, d’amitié, d’amour… Et de mal-être également. Si le titre feel, produit par Mount Kimbie et en duo avec le grand James Blake, est l’archétype de cette nouvelle direction musicale (avec sa référence textuelle au Yesterday des Beatles), elle prend tout son sens sur le dernier morceau de l’album, adhd. C’est de tristesse qu’il s’agit. Et lorsque vient le moment de clore définitivement la tracklist, il redevient, le temps d’un dernier couplet, le rappeur rageur et agressif qu’il est.
