It’s very difficult to pin a label to this latest release from Waka Flocka Flame. It’s certainly not your conventional rap album. Whereas his previous albums such as Flockaveli and Triple F Life: Friends Fans & Family are strongly focused on rap (as you would expect from a rapper), The Turn Up Godz Tour can most accurately be described as a sort of rap/EDM/dubstep hybrid. This introduction of EDM is no doubt due to the heavy involvement of Neon Dreams who feature on the tracks Turn It To A Rave, War (both pure EDM tracks) and Grove St. Party. This electro influence isn’t just limited to these three tracks and we even get a bit of dubstep creeping in on the opening track Turn Up God (Intro). The highlights of the album from a rap point of view come in the tracks All These Bitches (featuring DJ Whoo Kid, Future and Howard Stern), OVA (featuring DJ Whoo Kid, Offset and Ca$h Out) and Against All Odds (featuring Gucci Mane). This collaboration between Waka and Gucci seems to suggest that the two rappers have managed to move past the beef that they have had for years. On top of those already mentioned, the record includes guest appearances from Machine Gun Kelly, Stokes, Tony Yayo and Watch The Duck. This is not the tidiest or the most structured album that we have seen of late, but it’s certainly up there with the most energetic. © Euan Decourt/Qobuz
