Paroles simplistes, clips ultra prévisibles à base de bling bling, de véhicules motorisés de luxe, et de bimbos peu vêtues qui du coup bougent leur corps pour se réchauffer, le digital reggae triomphe avec Sean Paul Henriques, dont Tomahawk Technique est déjà le cinquième album studio depuis 2000.
On est évidemment bien loin des préoccupations de Bob Marley et de la musicalité et du groove organique du reggae roots, mais ce langage totalement basé sur des rythmiques électroniques saccadées et des arrangement dépouillés à l’extrême, uniquement préoccupés de quelques effets sonores plus apparentés à des bruitages d’effets spéciaux est devenu un langage commun à la planète, puisqu’aussi bien la couleur musicale de Sean Paul, ce dancehall pop, entraîne dans son sillage tout le son urbain caribéen, à commencer par ses nombreux clones hexagonaux. Puisqu’il surfe sur le succès (Imperial Blaze, le précédent a été disque d’or en France, et n°1 aux USA), Sean Paul ne change pas sa recette, mariant dans chaque chanson mélodies R&B pour les refrains efficaces et couplets toastés pour l’idiome.
A l’occasion, il se fait appuyer, par Alexis Jordan, jeune chanteuse issue de la Nouvelle Star version américaine et repêchée par Jay-Z, sur le single initial, « Got 2 Luv U », ou par l’ex-Destiny Child Kelly Rowland sur le poisseux « How Deep Is Your Love ». DJ Ammo, coproducteur d’une bonne partie de l’album récent des Black Eyed Peas, apporte son concours à « Touch The Sky » qu’on croirait tripoté par David Guetta tant sa patte vulgaire est désormais devenue la norme de la musique de danse. Avec la voix toujours mixée très en avant, encore plus flagrante sur la quasi ballade d’émulation « Hold On » (« accroche toi à tes rêves », ce genre...), on ne peut que rester consterné par la profonde vacuité des paroles, mais là n’est pas le propos, Tomahawk Technique prétend juste à faire danser et reprendre en chœur ses refrains familiers.
En cela, il remplit sa mission amplement, mais on déplore qu’il ne laisse pas plus souvent sa science du phrasé périlleux dancehall, comme sur le roboratif « Roll Wit Di Don », car bien vite les sonorités plus commerciales reprennent le pas.
