Like those Americana-obsessed Canadians in the Band, or more recently, Leeds-to-Chicago transplant Jon Langford, the London-based alt-country outfit Alberta Cross approach American roots music from an outsider's perspective that reveals facets of the music that natives might overlook. Serving up twangy country ballads and shuffling rockers with lashings of organ and barrelhouse piano, along with rich multi-part harmonies, Alberta Cross come across like the meeting point of Uncle Tupelo's traditionalist sound and the shambling, casual groove of Teenage Fanclub. Highlights include the lovely "Lucy Rider."
