A défaut de concourir pour la palme de l'originalité, Halestorm peut avoir quelques prétentions pour celle de l'efficacité. Bien calé sur un hard rock post grunge solide, Halestorm s'octroie volontiers quelques tempos moyens à la veine pop rock rageuse. L'intérêt de l'ensemble est fortement rehaussé par la voix androgyne de Lzzy Hale, parfaite Pat Benatar des années deux-mille.
C'est que la demoiselle en a dans les cordes vocales, dès le single « Love Bites (So I Do) » elle fait parler sa puissance, bien épaulée par un groupe sans génie mais compact. « Mz. Hyde » semble tout droit sorti des années quatre-vingt avec son hard rock pour radio FM. Sur « Beautiful with You », le timbre se fait plus féminin avec le genre de titres dont raffolent les séries télévisées américaines.
« Daughters of Darkness » donne dans un rock héroïque, avec une Lzzy Hale déchaînée à souhait. Elle n'hésite pas à se faire chienne pour « You Call Me a Bitch Like It's a Bad Thing », apte à générer bien des fantasmes adolescents. Certes, un « Freak Like Me » ou un « Break In » sont totalement prévisibles et posent les limites d'un groupe encore jeune. The Strange Case of... n'a alors rien d'étrange, il ressemble simplement au deuxième disque d'un groupe - et d'une chanteuse - bien parti pour la gloire.
