En 1959, date d’enregistrement de ce nouveau chef-d’œuvre de Ray Charles, le « Genius » peut à peu près chanter tout et n’importe quoi, bottin y compris. Il peut même aller jusqu’à revisiter (à la suite de milliers de chanteurs avant lui) des standards empoussiérés, sans une seconde tomber dans le ridicule.
A cela, trois raisons : il commence à avoir une idée particulièrement précise de son projet d’élaborer une soul music peu effarouchante, et à l’usage de tous publics, à commencer par les blancs, entité alors supérieure en matière de pouvoir d’achat. Son deuxième avantage reste une voix somptueuse, signature immédiatement identifiable par une audience en tout état de cause conquise à l’avance, d’un chanteur capable tour à tour d’émouvoir, d’exciter au-delà du décent, et de faire fondre d’émotion. Le troisième atout de « Brother Ray » reste sa faculté, en un claquement de doigts, de rameuter le Gotha des musiciens noirs américains de l’époque : il s’offre ici, outre certains piliers de son propre ensemble (dont le saxophoniste David « Fathead » Newman, ou le trompettiste Marcus Belgrave), l’amicale participation de transfuges des orchestres de Count Basie ou de Duke Ellington, dont rien moins que Paul Gonsalves (ténor le plus suave de ce côté-ci de l’histoire du jazz).
La moitié du programme de cet album est ainsi consacrée à six ballades (dont les imputrescibles « Come Rain Or Come Shine » et « Don’t Let The Sun Catch You From Cryin’ », ou encore le matois « Just For A Thrill »), où l’artiste glisse sa voix sur un tapis de cordes tissé par Ralph Burns.
Alors parfaitement maître de ses vocalises, Ray Charles donne ici son acception pleine et entière au terme de crooner. Les six autres pièces, arrangées par Quincy Jones, offrent entre autres une percutante version de « Let the Good Times Roll », et le swing délicat et impérial d’une nouvelle visite de « It Had To Be You ».
Ces séances, qui saluent l’achèvement d’une décennie, laissent l’artiste au sommet de son talent de chanteur, pianiste, arrangeur, et chef d’orchestre…et déjà chef d’entreprise. Un disque où Ray Charles démontre encore une fois sa capacité à atteindre des sommets grâce à sa versatilité. The Genius Of Ray Charles obtiendra un Grammy Award, saluant la meilleure performance de l’année pour un chanteur. Quant à la chanson « Let the Good Times Roll », elle sera couronnée du titre de meilleur enregistrement Rhythm ‘n’ Blues de l’année.
