Dans une Angleterre en proie à la violence sociale des débuts du Thatcherisme, aux émeutes raciales à répétitions, et au malaise exprimé par sa jeunesse depuis 1977 dans le punk, The Crack est une bombe musicale de plus dans un époque qui n'en manque pas.
Il faut bien comprendre que The Ruts est avant tout un groupe vraiment engagé et concerné politiquement comme The Clash avant lui. Les présences de Jimmy Pursey de Sham 69, Rat Scabies et Captain Sensible de The Damned, et de John Peel sur la pochette de l'album montrent également que The Ruts croit en un vrai mouvement où le partage et la fraternité ne sont pas des vains mots.
La musique par sa violence immédiate met vite le propos en lumière avec « Babbylon's Burning » suite logique du « White Riot » de 1977. Malcolm Owen harangue sur fond de sirènes, de riffs à pogoter, d'échos dub inattendus. Le festival ne fait que commencer et les surprises pleuvent, « S.U.S. » et son skank hard qui montre que le reggae aussi peut faire mal, « It Was Cold » exemple parfait de ce que le dub et le rock peuvent faire de mieux ensemble.
« Jah War » lui aussi certifié tube à l'époque, joue sur la répétition, sur les choeurs et les cuivres, pour faire monter la pression dans une chanson qui prône le combat face à l'oppression. « Human Punk » enregistré live au Marquee quelques mois avant la sortie de l'album, montre ce que punk veut dire, à tel point que l'on peut imaginer la sueur dégouliner les longs des murs étouffants de la mythique salle.
Succès à son époque - du moins en Angleterre - The Crack n'est pas un disque maudit même s'il est ensuite tombé vite dans l'oubli à cause de la courte carrière de The Ruts. Il est même estampillé culte chez ceux qui pensent que le reggae et le rock ont bien plus en commun qu'il n'y paraît à première vue.
