Après des débuts en 1968 avec l'album London Conversation, John Martyn s'est trouvé une partenaire de choix en Beverley Kutner, future épouse et co-interprète des albums « américains » Stormbringer et The Road to Ruin, enregistrés ou conçus à Woodstock.
Toujours plus surprenant de par son utilisation peu orthodoxe des effets de guitare, noyée de delay, fuzzbox et Echoplex, le songwriter écossais livre avec Solid Air son chef d'oeuvre d'écriture et de composition. Classé un peu trop rapidement dans le genre folk, John Martyn aborde un large registre allant du rock au jazz en passant par des touches funk et reggae.
À des compositions en or comme « Solid Air » ou le classique « May You Never » s'ajoutent une interprétation aussi tendre que rugueuse selon le sujet. Outre « May You Never » repris par Eric Clapton sur Slowhand, le splendide « Man in the Station » a fait le bonheur de Ian Matthews. Musicien éclectique et passionnant, John Martyn, respecté par ses pairs, n'a pas encore eu la place qu'il mérite dans la mémoire rock. Cet album à (re)découvrir absolument devrait contribuer à cette reconnaissance.
