Même s’il n’est pas de la génération des Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Billy Joe Shaver et autres Kris Kristoferson, Steve Earle est un outlaw garanti pièces et main d'œuvre. Une attitude en phase avec les reproches que certains lui firent à ses débuts : trop rock pour Nashville, trop country pour la scène rock. Avec le temps, Earle s’est imposé comme un grand songwriter, tout simplement, peu soucieux de savoir quelle famille musicale l’adopterait. Disciple et ami de ses concitoyens texans Townes Van Zandt et Guy Clark et donc membre de cette confrérie outlaw en marge de Nashville dans les seventies. C’est aussi un Don Juan intouchable (sept mariages !), un junkie repenti après une longue descente aux enfers qui le mènera jusqu'à la case prison, un acteur à ses heures dans des séries cultes comme The Wire ou Treme et enfin romancier (un recueil de nouvelles intitulé Doghouse Roses suivi du roman I'll Never Get Out Of This World Alive). Aussi à l'aise dans le country rock le plus punchy et le folk tripal que dans le bluegrass, genres qu'il aborde avec un cœur punk et une âme de rebelle engagé dans tous les combats de la gauche radicale américaine, l’autoproclamé hardcore troubadour rend ici hommage à la fibre rebelle de son histoire voire même à l’outlaw ultime : Waylon Jennings. Et les guitares sont furieusement de sortie, ce que Steve Earle n’avait pas fait depuis des lustres. Dès les premières mesures de So You Wannabe An Outlaw, chanson qui ouvre l’album et lui donne son titre, les intentions country rock du barbu sont assez claires. Et encore plus lorsqu’au milieu de ce vigoureux single résonne la voix de Willie Nelson ! Ailleurs, Earle duétise avec Miranda Lambert sur This is How It Ends, tout comme il fait ensuite avec Johnny Bush (l’auteur du Whiskey River de Willie Nelson !) sur Walkin' in LA. On sort de ce disque assez jouissif tout en sueur, recouvert de poussière et les poings ensanglantés. A noter que cette Deluxe Edition comprend des reprises de choix : Ain't No God in Mexico de Billy Joe Shaver, Sister's Coming Home/Down At The Corner Beer Joint de Willie Nelson, The Local Memory également de Willie Nelson et l’immense Are You Sure Hank Done It This Way de Waylon Jennings, hymne outlaw par excellence. © MZ/Qobuz

Warner Music Group (anciennement WEA Records) est le troisième plus gros producteur de disque dans le monde. C'est aussi la seule des quatre géants du disque à ne pas avoir comme ancêtre commun Columbia Phonograph Company ou Berliner Gramophone. On date les débuts de WMG à la création de Warner Bros. Records en 1958. À l'époque Warner Bros Pictures n'avait pas de division musicale ou de labels au moment où l'un de ses acteurs, Tab Hunter, enregistre une chanson à succès pour Dot Records qui était la division musicale rivale de Paramount Pictures.
