Sous la direction de Pierre Moerlen, prenant le relais de Daevid Allen, et de Steve Hillage, le groupe Gong évolue dans un format musical différent, plus technique et virtuose. Le groupe comprend également Mike Howlett (guitare, basse), Didier Malherbe (saxophone et flûte), Mireille Bauer (percussions), Miquette Giraudy (claviers, chant), Patrice Lemoine (claviers) et quelques invités. Steve Hillage, sur le départ et non crédité, fait quelques parties de guitares.
L'album Shamal de 1975 est donc celui du changement et d'une orientation musicale tournée vers le jazz rock. Il délaisse la folie psychédélique propre à Camembert Electrique et à la Radio Gnome Trilogy au profit d'un style plus sérieux qui a fait hurler certains fans et planer les convertis.
Il réserve néanmoins de très beaux passages chantés ou instrumentaux dans « Wingful of Eyes » ou le lyrique « Chandra » rappelant le Mahavishnu Orchestra de John McLaughlin. Les morceaux s'étirent, mais la diversité d'inspiration reste l'attrait principal d'un Gong qui frappe toujours aussi fort.
