Ce quatrième album est probablement le plus sophistiqué de The Jam, une œuvre de la maturité qui consolide la position du trio comme groupe majeur de son époque. Produit, comme le précédent et le suivant, par Vic Coppersmith-Heaven (également ingénieur du son des deux premiers disques), on y voit notamment le groupe enrober le « Smithers-Jones » de Bruce Foxton de luxuriants arrangements pour grand orchestre.
Les chansons de Weller, à forte connotations politiques, souvent excellentes (« The Eton Rifles », le plus grand succès de The Jam en single depuis ses débuts, « Little Boy Soldiers ») font de cet album un des tout meilleurs du groupe. Ce sera un nouveau grand succès commercial, classé n°4 en Angleterre, et le premier de The Jam à apparaître dans les charts américains (n° 137). Cet album a été réédité dans la collection Collector’s Choice Music avec neuf titres bonus, dont les singles « Stange Town », « When You’re Young » et « Going Underground ».
