Youssou N’Dour n’est pas sourd. Il a parfaitement intégré que, même s’il a été salué par public et critique, son premier album international (The Lion-1989) s’est vu instantanément suspecté de n’être qu’un produit galvaudé, trahissant l’idéal africain sur l’autel du libre échange planétaire.
On mesure l’ampleur de la plaisanterie dès les premières mesures de « Shakin’ The Tree », triomphe des cuivres rayonnants et funk pesant mêlés. En tout état de cause, et même si certains noms apportent ici une incontestable caution mondiale (Michael Brook, collaborateur de Brian Eno, est aux manettes de la production, et Daniel Lanois vient prêter main forte avec sa batterie de poche), Set démontre un authentique retour aux racines du Sénégalais (qui est majoritairement accompagné par ses confrères du Super Étoile de Dakar), nourri de percussions élémentaires, et d’un idiome (le wolof) sans concessions.
Il est clair que le chanteur abandonne (pour un instant, pour un instant seulement) ses velléités de cross-over, mêlant scansion africaine, et pop mondiale, policé et moins anguleuse. C’est sans doute par cet album qu’on peut le mieux rencontrer l’inventif, le dynamique, et le pertinent N’Dour.
Malgré cela, les ventes de l’album seront jugées insuffisantes par la compagnie de disques (pour un enregistrement qui atteindra toutefois le sommet des ventes américaines de musique du monde), qui remerciera l’artiste. Si l’on considère le triomphe à suivre, on peut étiqueter cela comme une boulette.
