Peu avant la dissolution des Boyzone en 1999, le chanteur Ronan Keating lance craintivement un titre en solo, « When You Say Nothing at All » (07/1999). Ce succès considérable l'encouragera donc à poursuivre dans cette voie et à réaliser l'album Ronan (31/07/2000), et conforté par la sortie prometteuse de « Life Is a Rollercoaster » (07/2000).
Musicalement dans la lignée des productions des boys bands, le disque rassemble des titres aux refrains pop classiques, chantés d'une voix légèrement éraillée proche de celle de Bryan Adams, chansons d'amour (« Only for You ») et douces ballades soutenues de chœurs (« Brighter Days »). Les orchestrations n'oublient régulièrement pas la flûte celtique, similaire à celle de « Titanic », pour coller aux sonorités traditionnelles irlandaises des origines du jeune homme.
Ronan Keaton a pu vite se rassurer, le public est resté friand de ces bonnes recettes, et le disque, en tête des charts européens, sera certifié disque de platine en Australie et quadruple disque de platine au Royaume-Uni.
