Malgré des qualités certaines, Born Free n'a pas été le carton attendu en 2010. S'il a sauvé les apparences aux Etats-Unis (disque de platine, Kid Rock n'est pas encore exproprié), Born Free a constitué un flop sur le marché international. La normalité musicale n'a rien apporté au natif de Romeo (Michigan) qui décide du coup de revenir à ses fondamentaux avec Rebel Soul.
Exit les invités prestigieux, dehors le producteur renommé (Rick Rubin), et retour de son groupe personnel le Twisted Brown Trucker. Mais le ver de la réussite a depuis longtemps grignoté l'âme du rebelle qui avait si bien su marier le rap, la country, et un personnage excessif et démesuré. Kid Rock a beau essayer de revenir à un son plus crade, à des thèmes plus choquants, Rebel Soul reste un disque désespérément normal qui peut être mis entre toutes les mains.
Le premier single extrait « Let's Ride » essaye bien d'enflammer les débats mais son tempo moyen s'arrête à mi-course malgré quelques larsens de guitare bienvenus. « Catt Boogie » ressuscite un instant les accents du proxénète du rock, sauf qu'il est désormais trop bien installée à la tête d'une écurie d'escort girls là où il faisait autrefois tapiner des gagneuses défoncées au crack. Côté défonce justement, « Cocaïne and Gin » tente aussi de rallumer la chaudière. C'est un nouvel échec, et l'on n'est pas loin de la parodie.
Le rock sudiste de « Detroit, Michigan » et « Redneck Paradise » n'est pas plus enthousiasmant, alors que la country acoustique de « Rebel Soul » arrive à éveiller un léger intérêt. Seul vrai moment de tension, « Cucci Galore » où d'un coup Kid Rock retrouve la vraie sauvagerie de la « white trash » dont il se réclame. Avant d'en arriver là, il a fallu contourner le gluant « The Mirror » dans lequel Kid Rock se laisse piéger par l'Auto-Tune.
Devenu avec son soutien au Républicain Mitt Romney une sorte de copie inversée de Bruce Springsteen, Kid Rock risque surtout de devenir avec Rebel Soul un perdant à l'image du milliardaire mormon.
