Avec ce quatrième album, No Rules Sandy, le duo américain Sylvan Esso, originaire de Caroline du Nord, s’épanouit dans une pop mouvante détournant les codes des grands mouvements électroniques pour en faire une ode au dancefloor apaisée, un entre-deux entre la torpeur et le besoin viscéral de bouger les lignes et les corps. Archétype de cette démarche, le titre Echo Party, temps fort de cet album où se croisent la house et les drops masqués. Parfois, Amelia Meath et le producteur Nick Sanborn frôlent les ambiances glitchées, comme sur Moving. Ils recyclent les recettes, les malmènent au service de la mélodie dont la douceur tranche avec les productions musclées. Une affaire de contraste qui fonctionne superbement. De courts interludes posant une ambiance intime parsèment ce No Rules Sandy, lui conférant un supplément d’unité et de singularité. Porté par le single Sunburn, qui manie à merveille les fausses joies et les fausses routes, promettant un rythme effréné pour finalement ralentir à plusieurs reprises, cet album est savant sans être complexe, jouissif sans être vain. © Brice Miclet/Qobuz
