Raye, de son vrai nom Rachel Keen, est un véritable phénomène de la pop britannique. D’abord par sa précocité puisque dès l’âge de 17 ans, la jeune femme travaillait avec des producteurs d’EDM tels que David Guetta ou Joel Corry. Par son aura ensuite car elle a rapidement travaillé en tant qu’auteure-compositrice pour des artistes comme Charli XCX, Little Mix ou même Beyoncé. Mais il faut croire que Raye souhaitait, pour s’épanouir, débuter sa propre discographie. Pour aboutir ce premier opus, elle a repris à Polydor sa liberté artistique puisque le label refusait de le produire. Avec maîtrise et talent, elle accouche d’un premier effort brillant à bien des égards, comme sur le rageur et émouvant « Hard Out Here », « Escapism » avec le rappeur américain 070 Shake, qui est sûrement le point culminant du disque, le sublime « Black Mascara », l’inquiétant « Environmental Anxiety » ou encore l’élégant « Five Stars Hotels » avec la chanteuse britannique de R&B Mahalia. Cependant, My 21st Century Blues manque quelque peu d’homogénéité et certainement d’une direction artistique claire. Désireuse de rattraper le temps perdu, Raye mêle en effet toutes ses influences dans un patchwork parfois décousu.
