Avec D’Angelo, Gerald Maxwell Rivera alias Maxwell tout court reste le grand libérateur de la soul des 90’s. Alors que l’OD de saccharose pollue la majorité des productions mainstream, le multi-instrumentiste de Brooklyn, mi-haïtien, mi-portoricain, concocte une version moderne des préceptes de ses maîtres Marvin Gaye, Al Green, Herbie Hancock (période fusion) et Prince. La spiritualité qui habite sa Maxwell's Urban Hang Suite le lie à vie à son idole Marvin. Le grand Leon Ware, qui a produit l’auteur de What’s Going On, participe d’ailleurs à ce premier opus, un brin moins monolithique que celui rendu par D’Angelo quelques mois plus tôt. Le bien nommé guitariste Wah-Wah Watson, gâchette ultra-funky souvent utilisée par Hancock, a aussi été convoqué à cette orgie mêlant soul 70's, smooth jazz groovy et beats rap moelleux. La présence de ces vétérans 5 étoiles garantit ainsi une certaine connotation vintage AOC à cette nu soul jamais trop rétro. C’est sans doute toute la partie instrumentale de ce disque qui fait sa force et son originalité face à une concurrence moins experte. La nu soul en 10 albums

Au milieu des 90’s, alors que le hip-hop vit son âge d’or, la soul entame aussi sa révolution. Avec Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Jill Scott et quelques autres, le genre retrouve la classe, la sobriété et le raffinement qui animaient les albums de Marvin Gaye, Curtis Mayfield ou Roberta Flack. Après les années de règne du R&B sirupeux ultra-commercial, la nu soul, nettement plus underground, ravive la flame de la soul originelle, dans ses arrangements comme dans ses textes. Un mouvement bref mais hautement influent.

Stax, on dirait le Sud…

Motown au nord. Et Stax au sud. Deux conceptions bien distinctes de la soul music. Dans la moiteur sudiste de Memphis, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T. et quelques autres ont inventé un groove unique, biberonné au blues et surtout au gospel.
