Two weeks after YoungBoy Never Broke Again released the Cash Money-indebted 3800 Degrees, the restless emcee teamed up with DJ Drama, presenter of seminal mixtapes by Lil Wayne, Jeezy, and T.I., for Ma' I Got a Family, subtitled A Gangsta Grillz Special Edition Hosted by DJ Drama. Far less hard-edged and aggressive than one might expect, the mixtape taps into YoungBoy's sentimental side, with acoustic guitars and pianos adorning the tracks, and lyrics frequently referring to his family members. While it makes sense that YoungBoy would explore this direction at this point in his career, this is not the release one would expect DJ Drama to be involved with, and his frequent shouts seem confusing and out of place -- he would've been much more appropriate on 3800 Degrees. Two major guest features, by Nicki Minaj and Yeat, helped push the mixtape into the Top Ten of the Billboard 200 after 3800 Degrees only peaked at number 12.
