Il faut donc vingt-cinq années – en fait, un an et demi – à Lenny Kravitz pour enregistrer cet album : vingt-cinq ans pour emmagasiner goûts, donc choix esthétiques, donc influences. Et un an et demie pour concocter un panorama à peu près idéal de frissons vintage, en compagnie de celui qui deviendra un alter ego absolu de toute éternité, le multi-instrumentiste, ingénieur et fan des amplis à lampes qui mettent un temps infini à chauffer, Henry Hirsch.
Dans cette première livraison, Lenny Kravitz enregistre du folk californien (en réminiscence de l’époque où la Californie sentait pousser cheveux et plants à feuilles dentelées), propose de la musique psychédélique à la périphérie de la copie carbone et des chansons qui portent des titres de standards du blues (« Sittin’ on Top of the World ») mais qui constitue indubitablement du matériel original. Pour le reste, Lenny Kravitz chante, joue de tous les instruments (à l’exception d’une section de cordes très distinguée) et compose la totalité de l’album (il y a une chanson, co-signée par son épouse Lisa Bonet et intitulée « Fear » – « Peur » – qui démontre que, de plus, et d’un point de vue conjugal, le chanteur est doué d’un sens inné de la prospective).
Mais au-delà des sarcasmes de l’époque (« copie servile », « manque d’imagination », etc.) il est évident que Let Love Rule reste un album suprêmement bien joué, très habilement référencé et entièrement agréable à écouter. L’album connaît un très honnête parcours dans les charts américains (et est triomphalement accueilli en Europe) et les deux singles, « Let Love Rule » et « I Build This Garden for Us » contribuent à installer durablement le nom de Lenny Kravitz sur la scène internationale.
