Le caractère acéré d’une flèche (à peine plus de vingt-huit minutes dans sa version originale). Des chansons merveilleuses, et dansantes, et signifiantes : « Chain of Fools » sera le hit, mais n’omettons pas un « People Get Ready » signé Curtis Mayfield, pour défiler tous en chœur, ou un torride « (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman » de Carole King et Gerry Goffin, voisin de l’outrage aux bonnes mœurs, ou le « Come Back Baby » emprunté à Oncle Ray (Charles), ou toutes les autres.

Des musiciens comme un gotha enfermé en studio (certes, les Sweet Inspirations assurent de ci, de là, les chœurs, certes King Curtis souffle dans son saxophone à s’en désintégrer la veine jugulaire, mais chapeau bas face à l’armada des guitaristes : Jimmy Johnson, Joe South, Bobby Womack, et Eric Clapton, rien que cela). Du courage (il en faut pour s’attaquer au « Money Won’t Change You » de James Brown, et en sortir grandie). Un producteur (Jerry Wexler) convaincu que la somme des talents peut créer quelque chose de grandiose. Une chanteuse au faîte de ses capacités, puissante, et tendre, dynamique ou romantique, explosive ou retenue, lorsque la nécessité l’impose, mais toujours régnante sans partage au royaume de la soul music. Tout cela (caractère-chansons-musiciens-producteur-culot-talent) cela fait un chef d’œuvre. Comme quoi, avec un peu de bonne volonté…

Classé dans les hit-parades durant plus d’une année, et deuxième disque d’or d’Aretha Franklin, Lady Soul atteindra en 1968 la première place des classements soul, la deuxième position des classements pop, et la troisième des classements d’albums de jazz. Trois singles furent classés dans le Top Ten : « (You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman », « Ain’t No Way », et « Since You’ve Been Gone (Sweet Sweet Baby) ». Cette année-là, Aretha Franklin fut gratifié du Grammy Award de la « Meilleure performance féminine en rhythm and blues » pour « Chain Of Fools ».

Et Lady Soul trouve sa place naturelle dans n’importe quelle discothèque.
