« J’sais pas jouer, or just que du reggae, j’sais pas danser, or just que du reggae » ... Qui n’a pas entendu ce refrain, léger et entraînant, à la fin des années 90 ? Kingston Karma est pour Pierpoljak l’album de la révélation. Certes, il s’agit d’un reggae grand public, accessible au tout venant et associé à toute une imagerie populaire classique (marijuana, dreadlocks, argot jamaïcain, chant nasillard, etc.) à la limite de la caricature.
Mais l’album a au moins le mérite d’ouvrir l’accès d’une scène aussi peu connue que variée à un plus grand public, dont la connaissance du genre est essentiellement bornée par Bob Marley, UB40, Jimmy Cliff, Tonton David (« Chacun sa route, chacun son chemin… »), voire les albums reggae de Bernard Lavilliers et Serge Gainsbourg. Naïvement écolo (« Pierpoljak », « Cultivateur moderne ») et un peu centré sur l’autopromotion, l’album n’en est pas moins intéressant d’un point de vue musical, ne serait-ce que pour la fraîcheur qu’il apportait alors.
Les oreilles du public et les investisseurs de l’industrie musicale étaient ainsi prêts pour le reggae, ce qu’allait démontrer le succès – radiophonique, artistique et commercial – à venir de Tryo, Sinsemilia (qui sortaient cette même année respectivement leur premier et deuxième album) et quelques autres.
