Kelis impose un style bien à elle avec son premier album Kaleidoscope. Elle apparaît sur la pochette couverte de peintures aux couleurs chaudes et une coiffure fauve.
Ses textes sont tantôt sucrés, tantôt énergiques. Le son est très novateur pour l’époque, car la chanteuse préfère travailler avec Chad Hugo et Pharrell Williams (The Neptunes), encore inconnus, plutôt qu’avec les membres du Wu-Tang Clan qui lui proposait pourtant ses services.
En ressort un travail original oscillant entre R&B, l’electro et le rap. Le premier single « Caugh Out There » surprend par son originalité, un son très saccadé, des paroles rebelles, considérées comme féministes parfois et le refrain agressif : « I hate you so much right now ». « Good Stuff » avec Terrar ou « Get Along With You » connaissent aussi un certain retentissement dans le R’n’B haut de gamme. On retrouve également sur l’album des duos avec Marc Dorsey, Markita et Justin Vince.
