Le deuxième album de Joe Cocker n’a qu’un seul défaut : il est le deuxième. C’est-à-dire qu’il ne peut plus revendiquer l’effet de surprise de With a Little Help from My Friends. Ceci établi, Joe Cocker ! offre le toujours aussi délicat équilibre entre ce qu’on n’appelait pas encore le pub rock et la joliesse de la pop, alimenté par un répertoire pratiquement identique d’un album à l’autre.

Deux chansons des Beatles s’affichent ainsi au sommaire (on a le droit de se réserver pour le déchirement en apesanteur de « Something »), côtoyant un air de Bob Dylan métamorphosé (« Dear Landlord »), le « Darling Be Home Soon » de John B. Sebastian (Lovin’ Spoonful) déniaisé et un « Bird On a Wire » de Leonard Cohen, en version de fond des âges. Si l’on veut applaudir aux leçons bien comprises du pape du blues britannique John Mayall, comprendre d’où viennent Doctor Feelgood, Tyla Gang, Brinsley Schwarz et Graham Parker et imaginer un croisement entre la langueur du rock de la Nouvelle-Orléans et le poids des Beatles (et le choc de leurs influences, « Delta Lady », composition de Leon Russell et l’un des plus gros hits de Joe Cocker, restant tout à fait explicite sur le sujet), cet album tourne exactement à la bonne vitesse.

On y salue avec émotion la présence du guitariste des Byrds Clarence White (il est loin d’être le seul invité, comme en témoignent les participations des choristes Bonnie Bramlett et Rita Coolidge), mais on s’empresse de rappeler que Joe Cocker ! connaît un brillant parcours (onzième position) dans les charts américains.
