Trois elfes qui se tiennent par la main au beau milieu d’une forêt et regardent avec détermination le ciel. La pochette du dernier Pistol Annies peut laisser perplexe, tout comme son titre d’ailleurs, Interstate Gospel. Serait-ce un trio lyrique qui chanterait en elfique ? Pas du tout. Pour ce troisième album, les trois mégastars de la country contemporaine – Miranda Lambert, Ashley Monroe et Angaleena Presley – se positionnent comme de véritables guerrières au point de vue assez féministe, contant leur lutte pour la liberté. Après avoir connu le mariage, les enfants, le divorce et la crise de la quarantaine, il est temps d’enclencher la transition. Une musique rayonnante qui débute sur un hymne à Jésus comme tout classique du genre qui se respecte (Interstate Prelude). Ces hippies du hillbilly combinent ainsi country, gospel, hard rock et bluegrass. Trois timbres bien différents et qui pourtant forment une harmonie originale sur ces 14 titres. Les trois jeunes femmes placent la barre très haut et l’on ne prend pas leur « supergroupe » à la légère. Ballades pop-country (Best Years of My Life), hillbilly rebondissant (Got My Name Changed Back), elles dévoilent un songwriting percutant, profond, clair et avec une pointe d’humour noir, comme sur le frénétique Sugar Daddy.
