En 2016, Marie Davidson faisait son “Adieu au dancefloor” sur un album très remarqué. Cinq ans plus tard, c’est ce même trajet que semble suivre Andy Butler, centre de gravité du groupe Hercules & Love Affair, signé dès 2007 par le label DFA de James Murphy, fasciné par ce projet hommage au côté queer de la club culture. Un album qui semble motivé par l’envie de bousculer les habitudes du songwriting dans la dance music. “Le focus est toujours sur la célébration, la joie, le désir, les peines de cœur… Mais la rage ? La contemplation existentielle ? C’est comme si certaines émotions étaient hors limite”, explique-t-il. “Faire un album de techno, de house ou des tracks de dance 80’s, ce n’était pas de ça dont j’avais besoin. J’avais besoin d’exprimer mon malaise.” Un malaise que Butler fait palper sur 12 titres dont la moitié écrite avec la revenante Anohni, la voix de Blind, le hit du premier album d’Hercules en 2008, tandis que la chanteuse islandaise Elin Ey apporte un feeling pop très fin de siècle, sur Grace et Dissociation. Avec à la batterie Budgie de Siouxsie And The Banshees, Andy Butler fait sa catharsis dans des modes très dark (You’ve Won This War), entre post-punk (Christian Prayers) et Nick Cave (Gates of Separation) et dévoile une nouvelle facette d’un projet qui ne sait pas faire semblant. © Smaël Bouaici/Qobuz
