Le punk, normalement, s’enregistre vite fait, bien fait. Les Undertones ne traînent donc pas pour aller enregistrer leur deuxième disque, au Pays-Bas. Et se payent même le luxe de faire un joli pied de nez à la critique. En 1980, année où les Cure sortent Seventeen seconds et où Ian Curtis se suicide, la mode n’est plus au punk basique. Il vaut mieux s’habiller de noir des pieds à la tête, et citer Camus ou les romantiques allemands. Pas quand on est un Undertone… Dans ce cas-là, on préfère intituler le morceau inaugural « More songs about chocolate and girls » , histoire de rendre hommage aux Talking Heads (« More songs about buildings and food » , sorti deux ans avant) et de se moquer de ses contempteurs. Ou tourner un clip inspiré du jeu de football Subbuteo (« My perfect cousin »), façon de montrer qu’à vingt ans, en Irlande du Nord, on préfère taper dans un ballon que penser existentialisme et philosophie. Comme le dira le bassiste Michael Bradley : « Etre dans les Undertones, c’était une enfance prolongée ».

Hypnotised n’est donc pas un album prétentieux. C’est même tout l’inverse : on a l’a l’exemple étonnant d’un disque qui veut se faire passer pour moins intelligent qu’il n’est (« It’s never too late to enjoy dumb entertainment », chante Feargal Sharkey sur le premier morceau). Pourtant, en un an, les Undertones ont évolué, et leur musique avec eux. Le groupe s’intéresse de plus en plus au rock garage américain des années 60. Fort logiquement, Hypnotised est donc un brin plus mature et réfléchi que son prédécesseur. Les pièces à conviction ? « My perfect cousin » , et son texte acide sous forte influence Kinks (« He's gotta degree in economics / Maths, physics and bionics / He thinks that I'm a cabbage / 'Cos I hate university challenge »). Le très pop « See that girl », et ses chœurs qui font « Papapapapapapa ». « Boys will be boys », dont le son lorgne fortement vers les Cure de Three imaginary boys. Et, last but not least, le merveilleux « Wednesday week », où Feargal Sharkey pose une bouleversante voix blanche sur une mélodie limpide. A lui seul, ce morceau contient déjà les promesses du futur Positive touch. Car, pour les Undertones comme pour leurs fans, le meilleur était alors à venir.
