Les funksters montréalais sont de retour et après une dérive pop il y a quatre ans sur White Women, ils reviennent à la base sur ce nouvel album. Dix ans après la frénésie qui a suivi la sortie de leur Fancy Footwork, Pee Thugg et Dave 1 (le petit frère du producteur électronique Tiga) ont décidé de rendre hommage aux anciens combattants du funk. Et dès le premier titre, Must’ve Been, on replonge dans l’esprit de Kool and the Gang, mais modernisé, avec la participation du rappeur DRAM (auteur du mégahit Broccoli) et la guitare de Jesse Johnson, qui a joué avec Prince et The Time, le groupe qui gravitait autour du Kid. On retrouve ce genre de grandes influences tout au long de l’album, comme sur Don’t Sleep, un bon vieux funk synthétique californien à la Lakeside, ou Count Me, qui assume le son de Minneapolis.
Les Chromeo ont étendu leur liste d’invités au chanteur américano-marocain French Montana, la rappeuse Stefflon Don et la soul sister Amber Mark, et en studio, ils ont pu compter sur les talents de l’ex-Tony! Toni! Toné! Raphael Saadiq, le géant du R&B Rodney Jerkins (l’homme derrière les hits de Whitney Houston, Jennifer Lopez ou le Déjà Vu de Beyoncé et Jay-Z), ou encore Pino Palladino, qui collabore avec D’Angelo. Un casting qui garantit une qualité de production optimale pour ce tribute au funk américain, même si les Chromeo connaissent les limites de l’exercice : “Ça ne nous intéresse pas de chanter la même chose que les chanteurs des années 1980. On est modernes. Le passé funk soul, c’est une influence, mais ce n’est pas ce qu’on est.” © Smaël Bouaici
